Last year, Romania’s milk industry registered growth, with the top ten processors purchasing a total of 476 million kilograms of milk.

What is the dynamic of Romanian the ice-cream market? In regards to ice cream, in 2022, Romania was the ninth largest producer of ice cream in the EU, with a production of 35.9 million liters, according to Eurostat data. Compared to the previous year, the Romanian ice cream output registered a 6.5% increase. The latest data from Eurostat, quoted by ZF, show that the value of the Romanian production of ice-cream exceeded 95 million euros.
As it results from the FRD Center analysis, some of the top local producers of ice cream in Romania are Alpin 57 Lux, Ice Dyp Balas, Top Gel Prod, Cicom and Cami-Delicia. Their turnover in 2023 was more than 30% higher vs 2022.
FRD Center has analysed the Romanian ice-cream producers and it resulted that the most dynamic of them is ICE DYP, a family business with more than 26 years of experience in manufacturing and distributing industrial and artisanal ice cream. Currently ICE DYP employs more than 650 people. In 2023, their profit increased almost 4000% compared to 2022, while their turnover went up 65.3% y-t-y, according to the FRD Center calculation based on official data.
According to ZF, Cicom, one of the five largest local ice cream producers, has budgeted for this year a turnover of 89.5 million lei, an increase of 11% compared to the previous year. In 2023, their turnover exceeded 16.2 mEUR and, as it results from the FRD Center analysis, they registered a profit 467.6% higher y-t-y.
In 2023, the Company signed new contracts with external partners that contributed significantly to their dynamics.
The first 10 ice cream producers in Romania had a cumulative profit of more than double in 2023 compared to 2022, according to Economedia.
According to the FRD Center research, the largest ice cream producer in Romania is Betty Ice, which was acquired in 2018 by Unilever. Other big players active on the Romanian ice cream sector are Nestle and Macromex. Froneri Ice Cream, the licensed partner of Nestle and Mondelez on the Romanian ice cream market, had a turnover increase of more than 30% and a profit growth of more than 152% y-t-y in 2023, according to the FRD Center analysis based on data from the Ministry of Finance.
Nevertheless, the Romanians’ appetite for ice cream seems insatiable. In spite of Romania being among the top ten producers of ice-cream in the EU in terms of quantity, the local consumption needs are not covered from local factories’ output. A continuous increase in ice-cream imports has been observed. According to the latest Eurostat data quoted by ZF, the value of ice-cream imports into Romania exceeds 70 million euros annually.
