Here are just a few findings:

1.1 Main faculties brief profiles
Established in 1818, the University Politehnica of Bucharest (UPB) is the largest and most important technical university in Romania. Currently, it includes 15 different faculties: Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Power Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics, Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Robotics, Faculty of Biotechnical Systems Engineering, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Material Science and Engineering, Faculty of Medical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering in Foreign Languages, Faculty of Entrepreuneurship, Business Engineering and Management, Faculty of Automatic Control and Computer Science, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Applied Chemistry and Materials Science, Faculty of Transports. Their classrooms and laboratories are located in three distinct campuses in Bucharest. Through sustained innovation, UPB has developed sections and a curriculum in line with the most innovative technologies on the market. One example is the license specialization in IIDI – Internet of Things Engineering. In November 2021, UPB has launched its own digital platform for the Erasmus+ programme, facilitating the enrolment process for international students.

The Technical University of Cluj Napoca (UTCN) includes 12 faculties located in Cluj Napoca and Baia Mare academic centres and in Alba Iulia, Bistrita, Satu Mare and Zalau locations. They are: Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Robotics and Production Management, Faculty of Automotive, Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Materials and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Building Services Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information, Faculty of Automation and Computer Science, Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Humanities. The educational offer is aligned to the Bologna system and includes bachelor, master, doctoral and continuous training programs. UTCN has over 400 international inter-university collaboration agreements. It is member of the European University of Technology EUt+.

The Politehnica University of Timisoara (UPT) comprises ten faculties: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Power Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering in Hunedoara, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, Faculty of Automation and Computing, Faculty of Management in Production and Transportation, Faculty of Architecture and City Planning and Faculty of Communication Sciences. The faculties provide education programmes to approximately 13,500 students. Within the 25 departments of the university work around 800 teachers. The didactic activity is organised in line with the Bologna system, with bachelor, master and doctoral studies. Furthermore, it offers postgraduate programmes. UPT has 25 research centres. The university has over 190 cooperation agreements with universities in Europe, USA, Canada, South America and Asia.

The Gheorghe Asachi Technical University in Iasi (TUIASI) comprises 11 faculties: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Machine Manufacturing and Industrial Management, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Applied Informatics, Faculty of Material Science and Engineering, Faculty of Hydrotechnical Engineering, Geodesy and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Protection, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services, Faculty of Automatic Control and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faculty of Textiles, Leather and Industrial Management and Faculty of Architecture. TUIASI has 73 partnerships with universities in Romania and abroad. The University has 23 scientific research centres and it is involved in 350 national and international projects and research contracts worth over 9 mEUR. TUIASI has 670 laboratories, out of which 14 high-performance research laboratories.

1.2 Number of graduates
According to the latest available data from the Ministry of Education, 80,188 students have been enrolled in license university studies in the engineering, processing and construction specialisation in the 2019-2020 academic year in Romania.

In its best years, the University Politehnica of Bucharest delivers 3,500 – 3,600 graduates.

1.3 Partnership with companies, with foreign universities etc.
The University Politehnica of Bucharest in partnership with the University Nova of Lisbon in Portugal, the University Politecnica delle Marche in Italy, the National University of Distance Learning from Madrid in Spain and the University of Tel Aviv in Israel have launched in February 2022 the project “Education 4.0: Living Labs for the Students of the Future”. The project represents the launch of a collaborative platform for the Industry 4.0 and will develop an international network of interconnected labs with research and IoT infrastructure and extensive data sets. The project is co-financed by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ programme: Partnership in Higher Education (KA220-HED) and will have a duration of 36 months.

The University Politehnica of Bucharest has opened in December 2021 an International Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence. It is organised in partnership with the Technical University of Moldova in Chisinau. The University Politehnica of Bucharest plays a major role in the development of artificial intelligence methods and applications, with various national and international research and development projects in the field and significant number of scientific publications and patents.

In partnership with the CAMPUS Research Institute of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, the mobile operator Orange has opened in 2021 the first 5G laboratory in Romania. It is a hub where academia, start-ups and companies can innovate and test solutions based on the 5G technology. The advanced telecommunications architecture supports the digitization of several economic sectors using the 5G technology, such as smart cities, green technology, autonomous vehicles, transport, logistics, agritech, e-health and cyber security.

The University Politehnica of Bucharest in partnership with INSA Group, the most important network of public engineering schools in France, have organised in Romania in August 2021 the second edition of the Summer School – The way from smart buildings to smart cities. The event has provided students with the opportunity to better understand the engineers’ contribution in achieving the sustainable development goals.

The University Politehnica of Bucharest and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have signed in June 2021 a three-year memorandum of understanding. The purpose of this collaboration is to support scientific and educational cooperation and to promote student exchange.

The Technical University of Cluj Napoca, through the Energy Transition Research Center – EnTReC, is partner together with the Cluj International Airport and the Cluj Napoca City Hall in the Holistic Green Airport Project. The project has a total budget of 34 mEUR, out of which 25 mEUR allocated by the European Commission. It will develop innovative sustainable measures to reduce aviation carbon emissions and to improve energy efficiency, air quality, biodiversity and waste management. The project brings together 57 local and foreign partners and associated entities that form a diverse consortium combining a high level of experience and expertise.

The Politehnica University of Timisoara, through its e-Learning Centre, has organised in February 2022 free webinars related to the innovation in technology and science. The webinars have been organised in partnership with the EDEN Association and the Romanian Alliance of Technical Universities.

In May 2021, the Politehnica University of Timisoara has organised in partnership with the Obuda University in Budapest, Hungary the 15th International Symposium on Applied Computational Intelligence and Informatics – SACI 2021. The main topics of the event organised in Timisoara have been: computational intelligence, intelligent mechatronics, systems engineering, intelligent manufacturing systems, intelligent robotics etc.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering within the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University in Iasi has been involved, together with the Technical University of Moldova in Chisinau, in a cross-border project worth 390,000 EUR to innovate in Industry 4.0.

The manufacturer of automotive components Continental Romania has strategic partnerships with the technical universities. The manufacturer has an active involvement in the students training and in attracting funds and grants for the research within the universities. Over 200 Continental employees actively participate, within Romanian universities, in the development of programmes in the automotive sector, such as: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Autonomous Driving, Researching Facility Management Industry 4.0 / IIoT Solutions Regarding Integrability / Interoperability and Supervision. Approximately 1,000 students have completed internships within Continental Romania in the 2020 – 2021 academic year.
