Established in 1818, the University Politehnica of Bucharest (UPB) is the largest and most important technical university in Romania. Currently, it includes 15 different faculties, such as:

In partnership with the University Nova of Lisbon in Portugal, the University Politecnica delle Marche in Italy, the National University of Distance Learning from Madrid in Spain and the University of Tel Aviv in Israel they have launched in February 2022 the project “Education 4.0: Living Labs for the Students of the Future”.

Based on official data from the National Institute of Statistics, the manufacturing industry in Romania has increased by 7% as gross series in 2021 compared to 2020 and the following relevant growths have been recorded:
• manufacturing of computers, electronic and optical products: +11.1%
• manufacturing of electric equipment: +13.6%

In 2021 compared to 2020, the turnover in the manufacturing industry in Romania has increased by 19.4% in nominal terms. The following relevant increases have been recorded:
• manufacturing of computers, electronic and optical products: +12.2%
• manufacturing of electric equipment: +26.6%

The new orders in the Romanian manufacturing industry have increased in nominal terms by 18.6% in 2021 compared to 2020 and growths have been registered for the following relevant categories:
• manufacturing of computers, electronic and optical products: +14.9 %
• manufacturing of electric equipment: +25.4 %

According to Eurostat data, in 2020, Romania manufactured
• other electronic integrated circuits n.e.c. worth of 478.39 mEUR
• parts of integrated circuits and microassemblies, excluding circuits consisting solely of passive elements worth of 173.85 mEUR
• electronic pressure gauges, sensors, indicators and transmitters worth of 32.63 mEUR

The Canadian Group Celestica has production facilities in Bors, Bihor county, NW Romania. The capabilities include printed circuit assembly, systems assembly, systems integration and engineering. It has clients in the European enterprise, telecommunications and consumer markets. With a team of around 1,400 employees, Celestica Romania has reached a net turnover of 278 mEUR in 2020.

UTI Grup is a Romanian innovative technology group. It has five business lines: IT&C, security systems, intelligent transportation solutions, construction and facility management. The covered market segments are: smart cities, airports, defence, manufacturing, environment, retail, health, education etc.

Systronics, part of the Swiss Group Cicor, has an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) site in Arad, Western Romania. It offers complete outsourcing solutions for the manufacturing of electronics component assemblies, devices and systems. Its main activities are: printed circuit boards assembly, test engineering, box building, tool design and fabrication. In 2020, Systronics has reached a net turnover of almost 58 mEUR.

E-Distributie has invested over 180 mEUR in 2021 in modernizing, digitalizing and expanding the electricity grid in Bucharest and ten counties in Romania. The digitization investments have targeted remote control systems and smart meters.

Tailent is a Romanian technology company known for developing intelligent software robots and democratizing access to Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions.

The development of new technologies is a constant process at the Continental automotive electronics components factory in Timisoara, Western Romania. The emergence of increasingly innovative types of components leads to a significant expansion of the product portfolio through the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies. One recent example is the digital on-board instrument which supports the driver with settings and basic information about speed, fuel status, navigation, multimedia system.

SCHURTER Electronics Romania is increasing its production area and capacity to meet future requirements. SCHURTER Romania is the production plant for EMS, EMC and Solutions and works closely together with the competence center in Mendrisio and the Solutions department in Lucerne.

Canadian company RockTech Lithium will build a factory in Romania to produce components for electric car batteries. According to the Romanian Government, the investment will amount to 400 mEUR. According to the company, the plant in Romania would create about 700 direct and indirect jobs and produce enough lithium hydroxide for 500,000 electric cars per year.

The 10th edition of the most important technology event in Romania – GoTech World – has taken place online during 10 – 11 November 2021. The major themes have been: business digitization, cybersecurity, smart city, neural engineering, space agriculture and gaming-inspired medical devices. 134 international speakers and experts have participated at 116 online presentations, debates and workshops and the sessions have been attended by 15,147 professionals from 5,848 companies. The edition GoTech World 2022 is forecasted to take place during 12 – 13 October in a physical and online format and the themes will be: main stage, IT Ops, Java, DevOps, cybersecurity, smart city, e-business, digital marketing, business transformation and retail. GoTech World is the largest IT & digital business event organised in Central and Eastern Europe.

The National Institute of Research and Development in Mechatronics and Measurement Technique – INCDMTM will organize during 8 – 9 September 2022 the 2nd edition of ICoRSE International Conference on Reliable Systems Engineering.

Energynomics organizes during March – November 2022 seven events dedicated to Digitalization & Energy Efficiency in various cities in Romania: Brasov, Cluj Napoca, Oradea, Constanta, Sibiu and Iasi. Some of the topics are: smart cities, smart buildings, energy efficiency in industry, solutions based on state-of-the-art technologies, electric mobility, waste-to-energy. The partners in organising the events are: ABB, Engie and Kawasaki.

The regional industrial developer CTP is the largest owner of industrial and logistic spaces in Romania. It has 15 parks in the country, with over 2 million sqm of gross lettable area. CTP targets to invest 300 mEUR in Romania in 2022. Its main industrial park – CTPark Bucharest West – covers 750,000 sqm and targets to become the Europe’s largest industrial park. At the 16th annual SEE Real Estate Awards in 2021, CTPark Bucharest West ranked 1st in the industrial project category. Set up in 2011, ELINCLUS is an electronics innovation cluster. Its areas of activity are: mechatronics, automotive, aerospace, naval, agriculture and communications. The cluster members include SMEs involved in the development of electronic products for various fields, such as: telecommunications, intelligent systems, automation, monitoring and control, high precision measurements etc. ELINCLUS organises periodically workshops, conferences, exhibitions, professional competitions, specialized trainings, meetings for funding opportunities. One example of major event organised by the cluster is the International Symposium for Design and Technology in Electronic Packaging. The cluster has 83 members.

Founded in 2010, Mechatrec is a strategic innovative cluster in the mechatronics smart specialization field. Its objectives are to increase the computerization and cybernization in the mechatronics industry, to increase the added value of the smart manufacturing value chains and to develop new advanced products, technologies and services in the mechatronics, integronics and adaptronics sectors. It collaborates with various international clusters, such as MecaTech in Belgium. Mechatrec has over 140 members, such as:

Set up in 2013, the Magurele High Tech Cluster project is the premise for the opportunities created by the ELI – NP Project not to be wasted due to the insufficiently fast and sustainable underdevelopment of the private sector and the lack of resources for successful positioning of the cluster, component entities, innovative products / services generated. on international markets.

The member entities of the cluster decided to focus on capitalizing on the results of scientific research conducted on the Magurele Physics Platform and, in particular, of the Extreme Light Infrastructure – Nuclear Physics Project.

The Romanian national robotics team AutoVortex has won in February 2022 the silver trophy at the International Robotics Championship in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Founded in 2012 in a garage near Bucharest, AutoVortex is a very successful project of the Romanian Association of Economic Studies. Starting with 2014, the team has participated at various international competitions and won many awards. The main sponsor in the software industry for the very talented team is the technology and consulting company Softelligence which has announced in February 2022 the extending of their current partnership for another two years. Softelligence has also supported the national robotics team in 2021 to participate at the Dubai 2020 International Exhibition of Technology and Innovation.

The technology-focused venture capital firm Catalyst Romania has launched in February 2022 its second venture capital fund targeting TMT companies after raising 50 mEUR. During the initial investment period, Catalyst Romania Fund II plans to provide 1 – 3 mEUR to 16 Romanian companies in order to support their growth targets and international expansion objectives. Catalyst Romania Fund II has been established with support from the European Investment Fund with capital from Jeremie Romania Reflows and the EU’s InnovFin Programme and LP contributions from various investors.

In February 2022, the Ministry of Economy has gathered project proposals to qualify for funding through NRRP for the revitalization of the microelectronics sector in Romania. They target large-scale innovative industrial projects to develop cutting-edge capabilities and early industrial applications in critical parts of the value chain in microelectronics and communications technology. The Romania’s NRRP has been accepted by the European Union, with the reservation of the amount of 500 mEUR for the invigoration of microelectronics in Romania.

Founded in 2004 by a Government Decision, the National Institute for Research and Development in Electrical Engineering ICPE-CA is a promoter of the knowledge-based progress in the field of electrical engineering. It is coordinated by the Romanian Ministry of Education. The Institute is an active participant in foreign programmes: Horizon 2020, Competitiveness Operational Programme – POC 2014-2020, FAIR accelerator facility etc.

The National Institute for Research and Development in Microtechnologies – IMT Bucharest is a public organization, coordinated by the Romanian Ministry of Education. It has been set up through a Decision of the Romanian Government in 1996. It has ten R&D laboratories and four centres: Research centre of excellence in micro and nanosystems for radiofrequency and photonics, Centre of nanotechnologies, Research centre for integration of technologies and Research centre for nanotechnologies and carbon-based nanomaterials. The Politehnica University of Timisoara (UPT) comprises ten faculties: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Power Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering in Hunedoara, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, Faculty of Automation and Computing, Faculty of Management in Production and Transportation, Faculty of Architecture and City Planning and Faculty of Communication Sciences. 1.2 Number of graduates
According to the latest available data from the Ministry of Education, 80,188 students have been enrolled in license university studies in the engineering, processing and construction specialisation in the 2019-2020 academic year in Romania.

In its best years, the University Politehnica of Bucharest delivers 3,500 – 3,600 graduates.

1.3 Partnership with companies, with foreign universities etc.
The University Politehnica of Bucharest in partnership with the University Nova of Lisbon in Portugal, the University Politecnica delle Marche in Italy, the National University of Distance Learning from Madrid in Spain and the University of Tel Aviv in Israel have launched in February 2022 the project “Education 4.0: Living Labs for the Students of the Future”. The project represents the launch of a collaborative platform for the Industry 4.0 and will develop an international network of interconnected labs with research and IoT infrastructure and extensive data sets. The project is co-financed by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ programme: Partnership in Higher Education (KA220-HED) and will have a duration of 36 months.

The University Politehnica of Bucharest has opened in December 2021 an International Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence. It is organised in partnership with the Technical University of Moldova in Chisinau. The University Politehnica of Bucharest plays a major role in the development of artificial intelligence methods and applications, with various national and international research and development projects in the field and significant number of scientific publications and patents.

In partnership with the CAMPUS Research Institute of the University Politehnica of Bucharest, the mobile operator Orange has opened in 2021 the first 5G laboratory in Romania. It is a hub where academia, start-ups and companies can innovate and test solutions based on the 5G technology. The advanced telecommunications architecture supports the digitization of several economic sectors using the 5G technology, such as smart cities, green technology, autonomous vehicles, transport, logistics, agritech, e-health and cyber security.

The University Politehnica of Bucharest in partnership with INSA Group, the most important network of public engineering schools in France, have organised in Romania in August 2021 the second edition of the Summer School – The way from smart buildings to smart cities. The event has provided students with the opportunity to better understand the engineers’ contribution in achieving the sustainable development goals.

The University Politehnica of Bucharest and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have signed in June 2021 a three-year memorandum of understanding. The purpose of this collaboration is to support scientific and educational cooperation and to promote student exchange.

The Technical University of Cluj Napoca, through the Energy Transition Research Center – EnTReC, is partner together with the Cluj International Airport and the Cluj Napoca City Hall in the Holistic Green Airport Project. The project has a total budget of 34 mEUR, out of which 25 mEUR allocated by the European Commission. It will develop innovative sustainable measures to reduce aviation carbon emissions and to improve energy efficiency, air quality, biodiversity and waste management. The project brings together 57 local and foreign partners and associated entities that form a diverse consortium combining a high level of experience and expertise.

The Politehnica University of Timisoara, through its e-Learning Centre, has organised in February 2022 free webinars related to the innovation in technology and science. The webinars have been organised in partnership with the EDEN Association and the Romanian Alliance of Technical Universities.

In May 2021, the Politehnica University of Timisoara has organised in partnership with the Obuda University in Budapest, Hungary the 15th International Symposium on Applied Computational Intelligence and Informatics – SACI 2021. The main topics of the event organised in Timisoara have been: computational intelligence, intelligent mechatronics, systems engineering, intelligent manufacturing systems, intelligent robotics etc.

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering within the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University in Iasi has been involved, together with the Technical University of Moldova in Chisinau, in a cross-border project worth 390,000 EUR to innovate in Industry 4.0.

The manufacturer of automotive components Continental Romania has strategic partnerships with the technical universities. The manufacturer has an active involvement in the students training and in attracting funds and grants for the research within the universities. Over 200 Continental employees actively participate, within Romanian universities, in the development of programmes in the automotive sector, such as: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning for Autonomous Driving, Researching Facility Management Industry 4.0 / IIoT Solutions Regarding Integrability / Interoperability and Supervision. Approximately 1,000 students have completed internships within Continental Romania in the 2020 – 2021 academic year.
